Science H. Logic
I'm giddy over the firing. Its really hard to see any downside with this move. As my man Troy just said, its takes a pair to pull off the firing and I love it. Its been pointed out that Markuson really only worked under one coach his entire career, may have been exposed some here.
Yeah our line has just been complete crap under him and im not sure if.this fire will help in the short term but it can't hurt any and especially in the long term this is good!
To my thinking, this has to be like a couple who gets marriage counseling and papered over the issues for a while, but sooner or later it unraveled again.
Also, it made me wonder if Bielema talked himself into Markuson as the 'best available' instead of evaluating further. If I remember he was the last key position coach hired, and at the time a lot of questions were floating around about Bielema being able to get 'talent'.
There has to be more, though, than players not adapting to a new scheme. Something else obviously happened.
I guess I was wrong about this. Like people mentioned before, takes some big balls but BB to admit a mistake 2 games into a season to make this move. For me, what happened that when interviewing didn't come up that 2 games into the year couldn't go on anymore?
BB 63, I read a article about it in the Madison paper, but it didn't give any names. I tried Googling it now but the first few pages were about the firing and gave up looking for it. It was more like heres a guy that the NFL were calling but choose to come to UW or something like that.
Perhaps the silver lining at this point is that it shouldn't send shockwaves through 2014 OL recruiting. You would think that Panos and Gault are UW locks even if Markuson leaves and Pierschbacher was on hand to watch the debacle at Iowa this weekend when they lost to Iowa State 9-6 so UW can't possibly look worse than they do. Not sure how that affects 2013 OL recruiting. Probably a big setback for Knevel but things seem to be slipping with his anyway. Evan, looks like you've got a new question for the mailbag.
The players didn't like him going back to the spring. That never improved, they just dealt with it. He changed schemes and techniques that obviously didn't work. And now it seems clear that relationship wasn't much better with the other coaches.
Hell of a move by BB. Bring in a kid who worked with Bostad, knows the players and what makes them tick. This will energize the line. I bet those kids are giddy right now. There may be hope for us yet.
First, I want to see the school confirm it. Anonymous sources can be wrong/misinfirmed.
That said, I understand folks being hopeful that firing Markuson will lead to improved OL play, but being giddy over it? A pretty accomplished guy, one who apparently is a good recruiter, is going to lose his livelihood and have to endure a major black mark on an otherwise impressive resume. Not sure that's something to take joy in.
Again assuming MM is indeed out, firing someone at this time and under these circumstances is a clear acknowledgement you've made a MASSIVE hiring mistake. You don't do that if the problem is just one of on-field performance. There clearly was something else lurking behind the scenes that we'll probably never get the full story on. It is remarkable that BB isn't afraid of the embarrassment of his own failure to try and remedy the situation as soon as possible.
I'm pretty sure Markuson will be just fine. He still has a contract, and has/will continue to make more money than everyone on this board (no offense if you're pulling in the bills). The issues with the players are well documented, and it sounds like it wasn't much better with other staff members.
Being an accomplished guy can hurt Markuson in a situation like this. He was his ways. He believes in them, and won't want to change them. We can't ignore this guy has worked under Houston Nutt since 1993! He doesn't know other ways of doing things.
If God dwells inside us, like some people say, I sure hope He likes enchiladas, because that's what He's getting
How much movement will we see in the two deep? I like the move.
