Dooley?

  • I don't know much about Dooley, but I'm a little disappointed by this signing.. Maybe someone can change my mind. But to me it seems way to early to being accepting a unranked player, especially with limited scholarships.

So you're fishing to see if other uninformed people want to form a jaded consensus based upon an admitted lack of knowledge about the player, lack of knowledge about how recruiting services work, presumably combined with lack of experience evaluating and coaching teenagers?

There's a small table of you in the back by the door to the smoking area. Sorry if it's a bit cold back there.

I seem to remember people weren't too psyched about Chris Borland at first either. Or JJ Watt, etc.

Let the kid play. F the stars.

  • People didn't like Tolzien either.

    AzBadgerfan

  • Or Borland!

I'm sorry that I can't spend all my time evaluating high school talent. It's not my job, I have a real job and school, so I don't have time and a reason to be evaluating talent. Sorry I was looking for a little insight into him. Don't act like everyone on this site is a god damn recruiter. Most of us are looking for some fun recruiting info. The least you could do is not respond if your gonna be a dick.

Don't worry about the response you got; people are just a bit on edge here lately with trolls from other schools popping up and the "stress" of having a ridiculously low number of scholarships combined with the unknown of our new coaches' recruiting abilities. This place is usually very relaxed, upbeat and optimistic - personal attacks and bitching are for the Scout boards.

As for your question, you are not alone. At first glance, many reached the same conclusions that you did about this signing. But, if you dig a little deeper, you'll be a lot more excited about it. A couple things to keep in mind. First, recruiting services are nowhere close to being done evaluating the 2013 class so there are tons of eventual 3 and 4 star (and maybe even a couple 5 star) prospects that are currently "unranked". Remember, with the insanely low number of scholarships available this year, the coaching staff would definitely not be handing out "safety net" offers at this point. Second, there are really only two other LB prospects we are interested in and one of them (Buddy Brown I believe) plays a different position than Dooley. Heck, they might even have something unique in mind for Dooley, we don't know. In other words, don't think that this instantly means we're automatically 100% dropping other guys off our board.

Those two things are really the most important to keep in mind at this point of the recruiting cycle. If you still have doubts, I would point to Mr. Sam Dekker on the basketball side as a potential example. He started out as an unknown fringe 2 star with almost no offers. Many thought Bo was insane for not either holding onto the offer and focusing more on his "superstar" teammate Tokoto or giving it to one of the many much more "deserving" prospects out there. Yet, once he hit the camps and basketball circuits, it became a much different story and people began singing a much different tune about him.

Lance, part of your issue is you are posting for the first time following a slew of OSU trolls posting similar posts in an attempt to rile up UW fans. Thus the response that you received above.

If you are an actual new UW fan on this site, then I'll gladly answer your question.

Recruiting services normally do not rank players they have not seen and Dooley was late to the party with his recruiting tape, which has received rave reviews by most. This is evidenced by the fact that Dooley received five quick offers within about ten days. In general, if the UW coaches offer a kid early, including at Junior Day, then the staff believes they are A list recruits. Don't pay too much attention to stars, they have some validity, but there are politics that play a part, albeit the total affect is not quantifiable. Just use them for information, but look more at other factors such as offer list, recruiting area (Florida and Texas have a lot of kids who are over exposed and get early and high grades, while states like WI have guys overlooked and given low rankings or are unranked).

For a quick understanding of a guys value, follow this short cheat sheet:

    Offers:
Prior to Junior Day: Superstar: A List recruit
Junior Day: A List, where UW gives out its first offer to WI kids to have face-to-face offers.
Junior Day- to - Summer Camps: likely still A List offers, new tapes for coaches, ability to watch kids live in Spring practices or 7-on-7 events.
Summer Camps: Offers are usually under the radar kids, but coaches have worked them against other scholie level kids, good offers (Borland is a good example here)
Summer Camp to End of Season (late Nov, Early Dec): Generally begin to be plan B offers, if other players have committed to other schools at their positions, usually also prospect that UW has stayed with until the top targets have committed elsewhere.
Late Nov. to Signing Day: Usually Plan C targets or kids who have blown up their Senior years. Often will cause a stir from the message boards as a waste, but have had mixed results (Reggie Love fits this category this year, as a player who only played a couple years of organized football. Tolzien is an example of a guy thought to be a waste, as he was part of the Friday 5, or whatever it is, as UW offered 5 guys right before signing day as they lost out on other recruits.

My point: If the coaches are willing to offer a guy, Dooley, on Junior Day with offers out to more highly rated kids, that means the coaches have these players equal in their minds. Dooley is a great pickup in my mind, a Borland-like film with better measurables (read 6-2 v. 5 -10). I really like this pickup.

It was kind of a dick response, so sorry about that. Like everyone said, people have been feeding the trolls lately.

Anyhoo, again, sorry or a rabid response.
