Danny O'Brien a Badger??

I don't think they are aware of how thin we are at QB. I'm not one for starting a redshirt walk-on.

We're pretty thin as well. We have a lot of star power on the roster with two 5*s out of three guys competing, but our previous QB coach was atrocious, and ruined one of them (Bolden). Jones is a question mark, because he's been ineligible until this semester, but he has a ton of talent and a cannon. That leaves us with McGloin, who is a walk-on type talent with a Brett Favre like bravado.

So, we too have a former walk-on starting for us. Which is awful.

Nice pickup, O'Brien is a good one.

  • So the other school that was in line for a transfer player now claims that transfer players are bad for the program. LOL! You guys should see some of the other excuses from PSU, it's mindboggling.

Texas Lion - I like you, you're a rational guy. But there are tons of hilariously delusional people freaking out on your boards.

  • Some of my favorite rationalizations from the PSU boards:

    1. DOB didn't think he could win the starting job at PSU.
    2. BOB called DOB back to State College yesterday to tell him in person that PSU no longer wanted him.
    3. Taking a transfer will kill Wisconsin's ability to recruit quarterbacks in the future. Never mind that PSU wanted to do the same.
    4. BB promised DOB that he would be the starter and BOB is too upstanding to make that promise so he took the UW offer.
    5. PSU's QB's were highly regarded HS QB's and are poised to break out this season with a new OC, so it's better that DOB isn't around to be a distraction from all that.

  • Is Bolden really ruined? I loved him coming out of high school.

  • Great pickup for you guys. DOB is a good guy who got screwed over by a terrible coaching hire. I don't blame him for leaving. He was a star in a pro-style offense in 2010, then they tried to shoehorn him into a spread in 2011 and it just didn't work. Edsall threw him under the bus repeatedly when it was clear the coaching staff was not doing their job.

  • I will cut PSU fans a little break because they likely don't know about all of the injures UW has suffered at the position. Phillips and his knee (3x), Budmayr and his elbow (gone on for almost a year), and then Houston's recent surgery. Obviously, they want him to start, but it also adds depth to a position decimated by injury.

Really important to get this kid. Edsall really screwed up that whole program, made a huge mistake with the style changes. Over TWENTY players have left the program since he took over. Can you believe that?

You can follow me on twitter, http://twitter.com/#!/jay_skebba , but I suggest you don't.

  • This is great news!!! Gives UW a chance to develop the other kids. Now can we get a monster d lineman to transfer and have immediate eligibility!!

I live in VA but get Maryland stuff all the time. I heard a local radio interview 2 months ago on 980 with Edsall. I have never heard a more aggressive and negative radio interview, much less one with a local station. The questions were relentless and loaded and I was surprised he didn't hang up.

He better win, and fast, because he is hated by a whole lot of people.

"We don't care about anything but winning. No one cares about ethical standards thats for losers..." BUCKNUTS 21 self trolling.

Yea, pretty much everyone hates him. Honestly I would rather see us go 3-9 than 6-6 the next two years because I feel if he gets mediocre results he'll be extended and I have no faith in his ability to ever be better than average.

Just reading this thread. Bolden is a disaster at PSU. Wots is that the players don't like him very much. Thank God, PSU stole him from MSU (and good riddance ).

I know that you're very short on Qbs but aren't you folks a little concerned about this trend hurting future Qb recruiting?

The only thing it will hurt is giving more fuel to the negative recruiting. We already have the "Wisconsin only runs the ball" gimmick used against us. On our end it is easy to explain. If it helps us win it takes care of a lot. Them recruits love them some winning. Almost as much as teams who used to win a lot 10 years ago.

I'm not worried. I don't want the type of recruit who can't understand that we were decimated with injuries and that a two-year starter would make a QB out of the 2013 class in perfect condition to come in and compete Redshirt Freshman year. Anyone else who isn't that smart probably can't cut it at Wisconsin.

If God dwells inside us, like some people say, I sure hope He likes enchiladas, because that's what He's getting

The fact is that we don't have a starting-caliber QB on the roster and that you can't run a program with two healthy QB's. If the recruit thinks he is starting-caliber there would never be a need to find a transfer. You lay out the depth chart, show him that your senior and junior QB's had career ending/threatening injuries, you don't know whether your redshirt sophomore is ready to be a starter, you have a walk-on redshirt freshman and your true freshman was having shoulder surgery at the time you made the decision to accept the transfer. You also tell him that you're passionate about winning and you'll do whatever you need to do to improve the program at any position, and that's why we want you.

I think it's easy to explain face to face but no doubt other programs will try to use it. I think offensive style, scoring and winning are more important to recruits, so if we're good there I won't be concerned. Also, if Houston turns into a multi-year starter we could be several years removed from this issue before it will really matter, and by then it won't resonate very strongly with recruits.
