The board has been in meltdown the last few weeks -- somewhat justifiably -- but I'm really thinking trading BB for GA might be for the best.
Obviously, we'll need a few seasons to really determine this, but my long-term optimism level feels higher than it was post B10 championship.
The perception seems that recruiting won't take a hit or will at least stay at the level BB had it at, after everything settles down. Carries and handles himself in very different, genuine manner. Can't be a worse in-game coach.
What are all your thoughts?
Definitely agree. I see a ton of up side to this. The only thing in my mind tempering my optimism is waiting to see who he pick for OC. If we end up with a place for Miller, Hammock, and Strickland and ALSO get a good OC, then I really do think this is a net gain for us.
We won't really know for sure until he coaches a game and a season.
What Bret did well was connecting with the kids and hiring a good staff. His in-game coaching was average at best. I will give him credit though, I thought he hired some great coaches in his tenure and I thought the kids did usually seem to like him. He also after the issues of 2008 he seemed to clean up the program and make sure all the guys were good people character wise.
As for the hire, not sure we could have done better. Petersen won't even interview anywhere else so no point in debating about him. Mel tucker's NFL experience intrigued me but other than him and Chryst, again bad timing, this seems like a good fit.
Whats making my optimism grow is all I've seen was positive stuff. Its not just crazy badger fans who like this guy. Nationally they are calling it a homerun hire. I've seen multiple comparisons between him & Petersen. Its one thing if its UW people saying it. Its another when its a virtual consensus opinion nationally its a great hire.
Usually by now some glowing negative thing has popped up. Other than his lack of Midwest ties I've seen nothing. I'm not gonna crown the guy yet, but I am getting excited.
Basically a big gain in game-day coaching and I think a small gain in game preparation during the week. Recruiting remains to be seen. I think he will be at least as good, but until we see the results, this is a big unknown. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the hire.
