Sure seems like it. He has the attitude that you can go after any player in the country. Bielema definitely wasn't that way. Gary said he wanted to get a hire done quickly, and he followed up on the promise by working extra hard by working with state law to make it happen. Bielema often played the 30 day rule and how it extremely limits him. Gary lost a coach. He took ownership, Bielema made excuses.
This never die attitude is going to rub off on the kids. I think we are going to be a lot better in tight ball games than we were under Bielema and a lot more mentally tough when we go on the road. I sure am loving this change. Coach Gary has to keep this up. And I sure as hell hope we do some mic'd up practices this spring.
He also seems like he has offered 4 star prospects in two months than BB did in the last two years.
I will wait to see if the approach that GA is taking is the right one after a year. Recruiting was going to be a top 20 class if BB stayed and UW just gone to 3 straight Rose Bowls, so he was doing something right. Offering all the big recruits won't mean anything if those kids end up somewhere else. I think we all can agree that a kid that picks UW will be a special kid that knows he is going to bust his tail for the name on the front.
I would hate going for a bigger star recruit that would be a huge upset to get and miss out on a kid like Borland because UW wasn't in on him from the start.
I agree. I'm not going to confuse aggressiveness for just throwing out a ton of offers. Let's see if he lands any of these kids. If he pulls a few of these in, then I will believe that he is an aggressive, good recruiter because I think we're behind for most everyone outside of the RBs.
There are so many homers on these sites that are throwing out praise to Gary for "being aggressive" and whatnot. However, he hasn't even landed a 2014 recruit yet, and, aside from Tanner, I didn't see him "win" any recruiting battles. All the late 2013 additions were kids that we should land 95% of the time.
Not bashing Gary, just think that there is a lot of people all up on his junk for no reason. He hasn't actually done anything....yet. Hope he does!
"We don't care about anything but winning. No one cares about ethical standards thats for losers..."
I agree GA needs land some of these recruits before anyone starts calling him a great recruiter, but my point is BB wouldn't have even went after most these kids. A lot of the under radar kids that BB liked to go after a still going to be around later in the process and if UW were to offer, there is a good chance the Badgers could still land them.
BB won three conference championships in a row. He knew what he was doing. End thread/
and lost three Rose Bowls with questionable decisions......he doesn't have a clue....he was handed a golden egg, and didn't drop it.....GA will make the egg shine........End thread
You need to make it to the Rose Bowl first, don't you? School record for conference championships in a row belongs to BB. GA has an enormous obstacle to even come close to the type of success BB had. End thread/
they lost 11 games in the three years they won the championship....5 in 2010 and 2011 to arguably horrible coaching decisions....I'm putting my money that GA will not only eliminate those mistakes, have them playing cleaner football...Bert was handed everything to him....GA earned it.....
I understand that some of you want to "wait and see" how this plays out but give GA credit for the aggressive approach. How long have people waited for an approach like this? To say the aggressive approach does not mean anything is unfair. Recruits around the country take notice. Your players definitely take notice. It shows everyone involved with the football program that you want to be great. I will continue to praise him for it as long as it is maintained.
Don't hate on people praising GA for bringing excitement to the program after a very unsettling time in our spoiled, stable history.
Honestly people you can't tell me your not happy for us to finally be trying to get a top 10 recruiting class? We'v been waiting for this forever and after 3 straight Rose Bowl apperences it's time. Were not friggin Iowa for christ sake. We will find out are we a powerhouse or not? I think we land alot of these 4 star guys IMO
you must be related to Bert. None of us feel that strongly and consider this a net gain. at least in the long run. last season wasn't exactly a success. well except for our tune up game in Indy.
Love the optimism - my only advice is to keep your expectations in check on landing several out of state 4* kids. History says they are hard to come by.
We haven't been to three straight Rose Bowls in history...it's time to find out if we can become elite.
Its true, he's gotta land some of these guys before we crown him. That said, you can't ever get 5 star kids if you never recruit or offer them. Obviously landing them will be much harder, but it did seem like Bielema and his staff shortchanged themselves and routinely settled for 3 star and sometimes 2 star kids.
Granted, we did win games, so Bielema wasn't totally full of crap. That said though, it seemed like he barely ever even tried to go after any big name guys. He certainly never tried to recruit head-to-head for guys with schools like Bama or Oklahoma.
