What are the chances Ben leaves with BB? This would hurt more than losing any of the assistant coaches in my opinion...our S&C program is the backbone of our developmental program. He's one of the best in the business and I'm not sure we could replace him.
It's really sad that our administration isn't willing to pay top dollar to maintain the elite developmental program BA and BB have built (facilities, coaching staff, etc). I think a big time football program does a lot for the university in terms of creating a brand of a school that has great sports programs as well as academics (USC, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc). The university hasn't been able to or willing to offer attractive compensation packages for elite professors either so it's not just athletics.
Unless there are sanctions coming, I think the reason BB left was due to university support and their unwillingness to shell out top dollar to get the excellent facilities (the new one is average which I guess is better than what is was before: Sh*t), top notch assistant coaches, and recruiting budget necessary to compete with other schools for out of state players, which is essential since Wisconsin doesn't produce enough homegrown talent to fill a roster.
I really hope we can hire an elite coach that can bring in a staff that can both coach and recruit...I just don't think we could afford it. I hope I'm wrong!
Good point. Never thought about him.
Really important he stays.
I thought about Herbert earlier today, but dismissed the notion. Herbert is a Wisconsin guy and I feel like he bleeds UW. Plus, wasn't he able to put in his input on the new workout space and get it to his liking? If so, you'd think he would be content... as long as BB doesn't come and blow him away by way upping his salary.
Ben is a Badger and played here and the players adore him. I'm confident he stays as he seems like a genuine guy whose interests lie with his players and school.
BB will offer him a 50% raise and we'll see. He knows as well as you do the value of that guy.
Probably should hire a coach and see if he wants Herbert or his own guy.
