Might get down to Chicago on Friday or Saturday and see Paul Turner.
Nick Noskowiak struggled tonight. Really played the first half of the game to "get his own" and it didn't work. Late in the game made a few mistakes and missed a big free throw down the stretch. But he does have enough game to play at Wisconsin but needs to mature a bit before he gets there which being a sophomore he likely will.
SIAP. Nigel Hayes vs Marc Living. Just went from six to midnight
If God dwells inside us, like some people say, I sure hope He likes enchiladas, because that's what He's getting
Koenig and co drop one to Onalaska, Bronson helped hold Thomas to one fg make
I've seen a lot of good players try and stop Matt Thomas. Never seen/heard of anyone who's had the success Bronson has had.
Matt was 6-22 in the first game and 1-12 in the second. Bronson is an excellent defender, he pays attention, understands weak side, is a good athlete and has good length. Hoping to see him on the floor next season in Madison, as I think his vision and passing can really help the offense.
Yeah could see him coming in and playing that Josh Gaaser role like when he was a freshman.... Talented kids need to see the floor and it will be interesting next year to see how playing time is spread around with a very young, small and unexperienced team is in place
Agreed. I live in La Crosse, and have watched Bronson over the years. He has improved dramatically on the defensive end. A lot of people didn't buy the defensive performance he had on Thomas the first game, but after the second....they're believers. He's great defensively, can score when he has to, rebounds, and is one of the best high school passers I've seen.
On a side note, of the 7 makes for Thomas over the 2 games (7-34) NOT ONE was a jump shot. They were all layups.
Today was the annual Border Battle event between Wisconsin and Minnesota HS teams, with the 2013 version being held at Prior Lake (MN). I saw at least a part of four of the seven games, which included some prospects UW has been linked to and a number good teams.
Minnesota won all seven games, with Apple Valley controlling Madison Memorial from start to finish in the finale. I won’t say much about Apple Valley’s Tyus Jones because UW is not involved, but he’s probably the best player I have ever seen at the high school level. He is so good and plays the game the right way, he must be a blast to play with. Minnesota finally has a good in-state group in 2014 after several down classes, with Tyus being joined by Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis in the top 50 of most recruiting services. Travis and his DeLaSalle squad also played today (relatively easy win over Appleton West). Reid led the way for the Islanders with 26, in another very impressive performance this season. UW was involved early on with Reid, but I really wish they had kept pursuing him. He now has offers from Michigan St. and Arizona in addition to the hometown Gophers and many others. I think he will be a very productive forward at the next level.
In terms of guys UW is still involved with, Henry Ellenson was the best prospect playing today. He didn’t get much help and Rice Lake fell to a decent Prior Lake team 66-53. Rice Lake led for much of the way behind Henry’s 27 (11-21 from the floor with 1-3 on 3s) and 15, but he ran out of gas late and Prior Lake closed the game out with a big run. Henry is just a beast, and he will only get more physical as he matures and eventually gets into a college strength/conditioning program. He moves well for a kid his size (probably 6’8” and around 250) and age, but I have a hard time seeing him playing anything but a big forward or even center at the next level. Though he does move well, he not terribly explosive at this stage in his development. I would think it’s fair to assume that will improve as he matures, and he is already very skilled, both shooting the ball and being able to handle and pass. I am glad to hear that UW has been out to see him a number of times this season, and I hope they make him a priority. I see him as a very good fit for what UW likes to do with their bigs, and he is a very promising young prospect.
I think UW has looked at 2015 guard Brevin Pritzl, and I hope they continue to do so. When the coaches are able to get go out and see kids this spring, I would expect the UW staff to see a lot of Pritzl, as I believe he will be a part of the Playground Warriors squad with Nick Noskowiak and Matt Heldt, both of whom have gotten quite a bit of attention from the UW staff this winter. Pritzl is a 6’2” or so shooting guard who best described as a gunner. I had him for 27 in DePere’s 85-70 loss to Hopkins, and while he did force some tough shots (9-22 in total and 4-11 from downtown), he was never off by much and kept putting pressure on the defense despite having Hopkins run a number of defenders at him. He actually reminds me of Matt Thomas in how he plays and how he’s built, but he’s probably a better athlete than Thomas at the same stage. UW could have four or five openings for 2015, and I would say Pritzl is definitely someone worth keeping an eye on over the next couple years.
Update on the Koenig game vs. Madison Edgewood
Hard to get a real grasp as to how good this kid really is going to be. It honestly didn't look like he was really trying out there. He'd see that no one was open and was able to create with seemingly limited effort. Hit about 6 floaters off the backboard along with about 3 trey balls. I think he missed about twice all game. Excellent defender, Aquinas is an extremely well run program that clearly overmatched Edgewood. Had a couple passes that a high school baller shouldn't have been able to make. Sees the floor extremely well, he's going to be a good player for us.
I'll be in Illinois on Friday to see 2014 SG Paul Turner.
Does St. Joseph play at home in Westchester or are they playing a road game?
Looking forward to hearing how Turner has developed. I'd also be very curious to hear how active UW has been in his recruitment this winter.
They are at home against Loyola Academy
Vito Brown goes off and brings his team back from the dead to advance to the next round.
Riley Dearring had 17 points in his playoff game to upset #1 Hopkins
Small quibble, but Hopkins isn't #1. They had 4 losses before that game.
"Earlier I said [Madison's] the greatest college town on Earth... It's a universally accepted fact." Scott Van Pelt, 2/25/2014
First time I watched Browns tape, wow.......wasn't expecting that kind of a jumper....very smooth and effortless....hope he can adjust on the defensive end and get some time next year....
Good to know, are they highly ranked?
Hopkins is still pretty good, but this is their worst team in years. That still probably means top 10 in the state, but I don't think they're a threat to win state. Minnetonka actually swept them this season.
