Great article about Bielema's stifling coaching style. Glad Andersen said he wanted an OC who was going to be flexible. I think the program is in great hands. Definite step up from Bert.
Evan, I hope this article is ok to post.
Matt Canada and Bret Bielema disagreed about play-calling before UW's dismantling of Nebraska.
I am getting more respect for Canada. Not just by his play calling, but how he handled this. He could have made it a big deal, but took the high road instead.
Agreed. I like him a ton now. I thought his playcalling was suspect at times but the b1g championship game helped his case. too top it off he had to deal with Bert
Somebody should tell Lance to sack up and come clean
That is quite the article and sheds light on what we were watching throughout most of the season. It's very indicting of Bret. What is a defensive coach doing dictating play calls? I know some defensive coaches have become very involved in offense and been successful like Bill Belichick, but Bret is clearly no Belichick. It should have been clear to Bret that we just did not have the talent to do things the way he wanted to and that the offense needed a different approach. At least Canada knew this, but was handcuffed by Bret. I guess I just assumed that Canada had enough autonomy that all the play calls were his throughout the season, but it appears that some of my frustration with the offense was misdirected. There are obviously issues with the offense, but it makes you wonder what the offense could have been all season had Bret just let Canada do his thing.
And to think I was the one defending Bielema to friends saying Bielema sucked at play calling. I was the one saying "It's not him, Canada calls the offensive plays so blame him." Turns out they were more right than I thought.
Probably explains the inexpicable time management issues in previous Rose Bowls too.I suspect Bert overruled PC at times too.
