Notes: Badgers hold scrimmage

Notes from Wisconsin Head Coach Bret Bielema's meeting with the media following today's practice.

Melvin Gordon

Bielema was happy with Gordon today.

Scrimmage held today

Bielema was happy with the offense's performance today during a live scrimmage held inside Camp Randall Stadium.

"At the quarterback position, I think all three of those guys ended up on positive notes. Obviously when Montee (Ball) gets back its going to be a different story, but very excited about what Melvin (Gordon) did today, and James (White) and even Vonte (Jackson) got in the mix a little bit. I thought overall the wide receiver and tight end position, the main two-deep guys caught the ball very well today, especially some deep balls."

Receiver battle still taking shape

Bielema says the wide receivers are still battling for starting spots.

"There's a host of guys. You have (Jeff) Duck(worth), you have Mannasseh (Garner). Jordan Fredrick had a nice play today. A.J. Jordan has caught the ball as good as anybody, outside of "Abby" (Jared Abbrederis), throughout fall camp. I think he's a guy that's in the mix there. There's some guys that are probably on the outside looking in. Marquis (Mason), I don't think is ready to play at this level right now. Chase Hammond had a couple nice catches today, one deep ball. There's six, seven guys vying for two or three spots."

Williams still in the mix

Bielema says Isaiah Williams could still see some playing time, despite being a late arrival to fall camp.

Jacob Pedersen

Jacob Pedersen

"Obviously because of NCAA rules, there's a point today where he couldn't be full pads. He will be with us next week. The one thing he's got right now is fresh legs. He's kind of going at a different rate than anyone else. He's got a chance to mix it up as well."

Deep group of tight ends

Bielema was very complimentary of high top three tight ends Jacob Pederson, Brian Wozniak, and Sam Arneson

"I think I probably have three tight ends, right now, better than I've ever had here. The group of those three are very special. Austin Traylor and Brock Decicco are right there. Brock Decicco has brought a lot to the table the last two weeks that I really didn't see coming."

A few true freshman could play

Bielema named a few first-year players that could see action in 2012.

"I think we came in today with the thought, Reggie Love, Dan Voltz, Vonte Jackson, I think that's it on offense. On defense, Reggie Mitchell is a guy we thought of a little bit. Vince Biegel, we had, we don't know where he's going to be coming back going forward. There are a couple kids we feel might be valuable enough to play them on all four phases of the kicking game. They might be in a reserve role on offense or defense that you might be able to add to that mix. I like Vonte on special teams. I think he's a good athlete. He's got the ability to do a lot of different things."
